Where Do I Begin?
Happy 2024! So much of January is filled with New Year’s Resolutions and thinking about how to better ourselves. But, as we know, 92% of resolutions go unfulfilled. Why?
When we set goals, we often set them because, well, it sounds good. We want to change. Everyone else is setting goals. So, we pick a few: go to the gym more, eat better, call more old friends.
What we forget to do is define the why: the reason behind we even want a change. This why is broken into two categories: our vision and our values.
Our Vision: How Do We Picture Our Best Health?
Consider:
What is your vision of a vibrant, healthy you?
What inspires you about this vision of optimal health and well-being?
What do you see as the key choices and behaviors that support your optimal health? What choices, if any, do you need to let go of?
What would be possible?
Our Values: What Is Most Important to us?
Consider:
What brings you a sense of purpose?
What do you want your health for?
What brings you satisfaction in your life?
After we’ve defined our vision and our values we gain understanding to the reasons we want (and maybe need) to make a change. Remember: every individual is unique and have their own vision and values in life. Your vision may be different than your friends’, and that’s OK. Though, you may find yourself gravitating towards a social circle that shares a similar vision and value system.
It’s difficult to start a change journey without defining these components. So, I encourage you to reflect on the questions above. As you think about what matters most in your life, consider how to use these assets as you work towards setting a realistic goal for yourself.
