The 5 Stages of Change… And What You Need To Move Through Them
Deciding to make a life change can be quite a challenge. We all know breaking habits is hard, and fully committing to something new can sometimes feel impossible. The process of change is really documented into 5 stages. Below, I’ve layed out what those stages are, what they mean, and what you need to do in order to move onto the next. Because… we sometimes all need that support to say thank you, next.
Stage 1: Precontemplation : You’re not ready for change yet. Why?
“I won’t” known as you are simply uninterested in change, or
“I can’t” known as you would like to change but don’t believe it’s possible
Need validation and to explore the benefits of staying the same as well as change Need help exploring barriers for change
In this stage, you likely feel stuck or destined to continue on this way. What can you do?
Explore the pros of staying the same and those of changing. Then, explore the cons for each. Ask yourself, what will life be like in 5 years without a change? How will it be different with a change? Chances are you will expand your self-awareness and get more insight into what you need
Stage 2: Contemplation : You’re thinking about change
“I may” known as you are considering action in the next 6 months
In this stage, you likely have some ambivalence around change knowing that it will be challenging. What can you do?
Explore barriers to change. What’s stopping you? What do you need to do to relieve these barriers?
Think about how this change relates to your vision of your overall health and well-being and how it validates the version of yourself you want to be
Stage 3: Preparation : You’re preparing for action
“I will” known as you are planning action within the next month have thought of barriers and solutions
In this stage, you are setting an intention for change. What can you do to move into action?
Create your action plan. What strategies and solutions do you need in place to start your desired change and address these barriers?
Stage 4: Action: You’re doing it!
“I am” known as you are taking action
In this stage, you are building new relationships, practicing new behaviors, and establishing new habits. How to keep it up?
Celebrate your strength and keep your values at the top of your mind to stay on track
Develop social relationships with others sharing your goal
Recognize that lapses are normal and part of the process. See it as a temporary setback and learning experience, not an indication of failure.
Stage 5: Maintenance: You’re maintaining it
“I still am” known as the new behavior change is a habit and done automatically
In this stage you likely have high self-efficacy around the behavior. What to keep in mind?
There is a risk of boredom, lapse, & slipping back. To combat this, remember why you started in envisioning that healthy & happy you.
Remember lapses are normal and continue to make quick rebounds from a setback
While the process looks relatively short on paper, remember that change is a journey. It takes time. If you’re feeling stuck in a particular stage, try the suggestions above to keep yourself moving through the process :).
